Report: Core science and mathematics degree courses in the UK 1998-2007
In the decade to 2007, there has been a 10% reduction in the number of core, ie single honours, science and maths degree courses offered by UK higher education institutions.

A 10% drop? To be honest, I think this comes down to lack of demand by students. And this is caused by poorly taught maths at second level and a maths syllabus that just does not work. I think the maths syllabus needs to be fused more with problems you could see at higher level or at work. For example, sequence and series at second level should be full of actuary problems. Calculus should be full of maximizing profit problems etc.
