Listen to Bug Highway In The Sky
there are 3 billion insects passing over your head in a summer month, he was talking about his survey in Great Britain. Closer to the equator, he says, the numbers should rise. He wouldn’t be surprised, for example, that in the sky over Houston or New Orleans there could be 6 billion critters passing overhead in a month.

Maybe there’s a valid reason why these bugs are up there in the first place. More research is needed in this area. Maybe they know something we don’t?
Ha I heard that story on NPR on my way to work the other day. I actually heard a similar story on weekend edition this morning about a breed of ants that has migrated from the country side and is now dwelling in urban areas. It was interesting to learn that these ants normally have colonies of about 50 ants in the wild, but in the city these colonies can be in the tens of thousands. Crazy stuff.
I heard about this on NPR and was amused. I’ve known that spiders and other insects hitch a ride on the wind ever since I read Charlotte’s Web thirty years ago.
