Kevin Kelly has started a new blog: Street Use. Street Use highlights home engineered technology solutions. Interesting stuff, and given the Kevin Kelly’s great ideas this blog should be interesting.

A guy takes copper tubing wrapped in a spiral around both sides of an electric fan. The tubing is connected (via cable ties) to an aquarium pump which circulates ice water held in a plastic storage bin beneath the fan. The fan then dispenses the cold into the room. A full set of pictures can be seen on the guy’s Flickr set.

Robots Wrestling, Students Learning

Robots Wrestling, Students Learning by Jessica Marks:

Building motorized robots and making them sumo wrestle is more than just fun – it’s also a way for high school and college students to get interested in engineering, and David Martinez, engineering department chair at College of the Canyons in Valencia, is dedicated to doing just that.

And it has been exciting for many of the students who took Martinez’s class over the summer – a class that was designed to give students an introduction to robotics and engineering.

These students spent a majority of their 9-week class building a “Boe-bot” – a small “brain with wheels,” which the students modified – putting light sensors on them to detect shadows and “whiskers” to detect hard objects – so they could perform tasks, most of which were pretty complex.

One group of students filed down part of the aluminum legs and made the Boe-bot creep around like a spider. It was able to climb the steep dirt embankment outside the class.

And while the students were having fun, they were actually learning high-end scientific and mathematical concepts.

College of the Canyons is part of the California Regional Consortium for Engineering Advances in Technological Education (CREATE) project is a joint effort between seven community colleges and over 30 large high tech engineering/technology employers.

Poincaré Conjecture

But at the moment of his putative triumph, Dr. Perelman is nowhere in sight. He is an odds-on favorite to win a Fields Medal, math’s version of the Nobel Prize, when the International Mathematics Union convenes in Madrid next Tuesday. But there is no indication whether he will show up.

Also left hanging, for now, is $1 million offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute in Cambridge, Mass., for the first published proof of the conjecture, one of seven outstanding questions for which they offered a ransom back at the beginning of the millennium.

Feed your Newborn Neurons

New Neurons Need Signals to Survive:

The Reinvention of the Self by Jonah Lehrer (on neurogenesis – the creation of new brain cells):

Beginning in 1962, a researcher at MIT named Joseph Altman published several papers claiming that adult rats, cats, and guinea pigs all formed new neurons. Although Altman used the same technique that Rakic would later use in monkey brains—the injection of radioactive thymidine—his results were at first ridiculed, then ignored, and soon forgotten.

As a result, the field of neurogenesis vanished before it began. It would be another decade before Michael Kaplan, at the University of New Mexico, would use an electron microscope to image neurons giving birth. Kaplan discovered new neurons everywhere in the mammalian brain, including the cortex. Yet even with this visual evidence, science remained stubbornly devoted to its doctrine. Kaplan remembers Rakic telling him that “Those [cells] may look like neurons in New Mexico, but they don’t in New Haven.” Faced with this debilitating criticism, Kaplan, like Altman before him, abandoned the field of neurogenesis.

Electrical Engineering Student

I ran across Christian Montoya’s web site today, he is:

a 20 year old Electrical Engineering student at Cornell University. I will graduate in May of 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. My main focus is digital circuit design and I am also interested in networks and statistical analysis.

I am currently looking for a job, preferably in Europe. I am studying in the U.S. and I am a U.S. citizen so finding overseas employment isn’t easy.

I like the use of the blog to aid in finding employment. We see many warnings about how internet posting is going to harm students careers – but blogging can help your career. He also has a series of posts on life at Cornell, including:

Van Gogh Painted Perfect Turbulence

Van Gogh seems to be the only painter able to render turbulence with such mathematical precision. “We have examined other apparently turbulent paintings of several artists and find no evidence of Kolmogorov scaling,” says Aragon.

Partially this article, Van Gogh painted perfect turbulence, discusses some interesting science:

Scientists have struggled for centuries to describe turbulent flow — some are said to have considered the problem harder than quantum mechanics. It is still unsolved, but one of the foundations of the modern theory of turbulence was laid by the Soviet scientist Andrei Kolmogorov in the 1940s.

He predicted a particular mathematical relationship between the fluctuations in a flow’s speed and the rate at which it dissipates energy as friction. Kolmogorov’s work led to equations describing the probability of finding a particular velocity difference between any two points in the fluid. These relationships are called Kolmogorov scaling.

But really it just gave me an excuse to post the photo I took of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night on a recent trip to New York City. MIT’s Energy ‘Manhattan Project’

MIT’s Energy ‘Manhattan Project’ by Mark Anderson:

David Jhirad, a former deputy assistant secretary of energy and current VP for science and research at the World Resources Institute, said no other institution or government anywhere has taken on such an intensive, creative, broad-based, and wide-ranging energy research initiative.

Many of these projects are ongoing and will continue under the Energy Research Council banner. Others, such as a new effort to make cheap ethanol using a biochemical technique called metabolic engineering, apply the expertise of faculty and staff who had never worked on energy problems before.

The council will also hire faculty in fields, such as optimizing energy distribution and transmission, if it finds MIT hasn’t devoted enough resources to them.

Engineering Projects in Community Service

Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) at Purdue University provides students the opportunity to apply engineering to provide real world solutions in the community (since 1995). Over 25 projects are underway including:

  • Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology – to design new software and hardware to spark the interest of girls in technology. Projects include: multimedia computer games; interactive and intelligent toys – the link includes downloadable games
  • Columbian Park Zoo – to design, build, deliver, and maintain engineering projects that will aid the Columbian Park Zoo in inspiring the community with an appreciation for the world’s animals.
  • Discovering Engineering Careers – to Develop portable, hands-on demonstrations of engineering principles and practice and web-based games that will spark interest in engineering careers among elementary, middle, and junior high school students and teachers.
  • Klondike Elementary School – to design custom educational products involving both hardware and software.

More Unmanned Water Vehicles

The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International recently completed the 9th International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition [link broken, so it was removed].

City College built little sub that almost could by Ronald W. Powell:

The four-day event ended yesterday with the University of Florida repeating as champions and winning $7,000, and Duke finishing second and claiming $5,000.

Academic teams from 20 colleges and universities and one high school deployed their submersibles in a pool at Point Loma’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center and attempted to complete three underwater tasks. The crew from San Diego City College was among 11 teams to navigate its 22-pound vessel through a gate.

While we have posted about several autonomous water robots lately don’t think water is the only place engineers are experimenting with autonomous robots. The Aerial Robotics Competition [link broken, so it was removed] offers bragging rights and possibly US $60,000 (if I understand the rules – see the full rules for details [link broken, so it was removed]). Ginko Cells Host Alga

Ghost in the (Plant) Machine (science magazine broke link *sigh* so I removed it) by Elizabeth Pennisi:

A common ornamental tree planted along sidewalks and in gardens throughout the world, Ginkgo biloba–also called the maidenhair tree–has been considered a source of herbal medicine for millennia. During the 1990s, several studies showed the extracts helped improve memory in patients with dementia (ScienceNOW, 30 May). And today, ginkgo is a popular remedy sold not just for memory loss but also for ailments ranging from depression to hemorrhoids.

further investigation indicated that live ginkgo cells were harboring algal “ghosts”: nondescript cell bodies that lacked a nucleus or chloroplast. When ginkgo cells died, these ghosts came back to life, transforming themselves into free-living, photosynthesizing algae.

In living cells, the algae depend on the ginkgo for food. In return, it’s possible that the algae somehow help produce the ginkgo’s medicinal compounds, he suggests. Not much is known about the synthesis of these unique compounds except that making them requires two compartments–the cytosol–and “some unknown organelle,” says Huss. That organelle might be the algae.

Whatever the nature of the partnership, it could be more than a hundred million years old. Ginkgos date back to the dinosaurs, and researchers know already that the two other plants dating back that far back depend on symbiosis to survive. “That makes me think that symbiosis is part of an ancient story,”
